Retirement Age of Central Government Employees Controversy Begins Again





“Retirement age for Central Government employees is 60 years now. It was raised to 60 from 58 in 1998(Dopt order), when the then NDA Government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee”





Last year, there were rumours that the centre was planning to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62. This time, retirement age makes headlines one again that the superannuation age may be decreased to 58.

Recently rumour mill went overdrive in social media with the following news that





1.central government decided to Merge 50% DA with basic pay with effect from 1.1.2015 and order will be issued within 15 days





2. Encashment of Earned Leave to be curtailed to 180days instead of existing 300 days.





3.It went on to say that age of Retirement will be on completion of 33 Years of service or at the age of 58 Years whichever is earlier

“All Government servants are to retire on the last day of the month in which they attain the age of 60 years, subject to the exceptions mentioned therein”.





The DoPT Minister informed in the Parliament as a written reply to a question to the subject above mentioned as follows…





As per Rule 56 of Fundamental Rules all Government servants are to retire on the last day of the month in which they attain the age of 60 years, subject to the exceptions mentioned therein. A copy of the relevant rule is annexed. Different age of retirement for certain categories has been fixed on functional requirements.

No Plans to Reduce Retirement Age – Centre clarifies





The Centre has clarified in the Parliament that there are no plans to reduce the retirement age for Central Government employees. The Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh had said this via a written reply to a query in Rajya Sabha yesterday.





The Minister has already clarified that there are no plans to increase the retirement age to 62 in Rajya Sabha on 11th December 2014.





This puts to rest speculations that had been making the rounds for a number of weeks now.

A popular English daily reported on the 28th of last month that the Central Government is giving serious thoughts about reducing the retirement age of its employees. The news has created a big buzz among the employees working under Central Government.





It was said that the proposal is part of the Government’s strategy to reduce non-plan expenses. It was mentioned that a senior official said that the move will help giving employment opportunities to new people under the new recommendations to be suggested by the 7th Pay Commission.
